Our HistoryOur land trust arose from discussions by the Arrowsic Conservation Commission in the late 1980’s concerning the need for a land conservation organization in the area. There was little understanding at the time of what such an organization was actually supposed to do, whether it should be organized at the Town level or service a larger area and even whether it should be a conservation or housing trust. Finally it was decided to convene a meeting involving representatives from surrounding towns to discuss the issue and possible alternatives. The first meeting took place at the Arrowsic town hall. In addition to Arrowsic Conservation Commission members Bill Blaiklock and Phine Ewing other attendees included John Doane (Phippsburg), Bob Lundstrom and Hal Bonner (Georgetown) and Jack Witham (Arrowsic), all of whom later became directors and incorporators. John Doane had just drafted bylaws for the reorganized Phippsburg Land Trust and was able to describe the land trust mission, responsibilities and incorporation process in detail. At the conclusion of the meeting, the group agreed to begin the process of forming a regional conservation land trust to serve the lower Kennebec River region. Over the next year or so the group met around the Blaiklock’s dining room table to hash out charter and bylaws, towns to be included and many other details. Thanks to the “template” provide by John Doane’s previous efforts, the incorporation effort was completed without recourse to an attorney and LKRLT was incorporated on March 8, 1989. IRS 501(c)(3) status was attained on November 6, 1989. |
