About Us

Volunteer Program

About half of the nation's land trusts are staffed entirely by volunteers. We have a part time staff and use volunteers on a continuing basis for various needs, including office work, trail maintenance, events planning, and communication.

Even an hour can make a difference, please check the list of volunteer activities, or call the office to see how you can help. Thank you!

Adopt-a-Preserve Program

The stewardship committee is looking for people to regularly visit preserves and report trail conditions, usage, and fascinating facts you observe.

Some of the things we want to know are:

  • Tree damage - by storm, deadfall, or wildlife
  • Trail conditions  - erosion, underbrush growth, trash
  • Possible clean-up sites  - invasive plants
  • Wildlife sightings, flora found  - Is the wild rice in yet? The trailing arbutus in bloom? Are the red wing blackbirds back?
  • Trail usage - How many did you count using the trails?  What was the reason for their visit; dog walk, birding, fishing, spiritual break?

Our purpose is twofold: monitor the open space we are preserving and continue to record the history of the land. (Trail brochures for individual preserves include a brief timeline.)

Please sign up by sending an email to info@lkrlt.org, call the office (207-442-8400) or Anne Hammond, stewardship chair, at 207-442-8535. We would like your name, email, and phone number and the name of the preserve you would like to monitor.

There is no required time or number of visits, but once every few weeks is desirable. All input will be useful and welcome. Report forms will be available. Comments will be collected for future policy planning and trail work preparation.
