Lansing Radio Station Holds Annual Backpack Giveaway
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $864 on school items, up $15 from last year.
The Power 96.5 Backpack is one of the few local efforts to help families by providing needed supplies free of charge.
“This is our annual backpack giveaway where we give away over 1,000 backpacks full of supplies,” said Power 96.5 on-air personality KC Mcintosh.
Data weaving tracks consumer prices and new reports show that prices for laptops and folders are up the most at almost 32% over last year and the price of backpacks is up almost 12 % to reach an average of about 70 dollars.
For moms like Monique Maiden, this gift is a big help.
“I’m so grateful that we were able to go out and buy a lot more stuff than I could afford if I went to the store,” Maiden said.
For more than a decade, Power 96.5 and Communities In Schools have donated backpacks to children in Lansing and the Lansing Police Department has also contributed.
“Community service and community policing are great here in Lansing and we love doing it, so we partnered with them and provided backpacks for students in the Lansing School District,” said Anthony VandeVoorde, Constable community services.
And for those who get their hands on these supplies, they say they’re grateful.
